The second volume in the "Frontier Issues in Economic Thought" series, The Consumer Society contains many of the most influential articles in the field of consumer behavior and lifestyles. The collection is presented in a reader friendly manner: it provides summaries of the original articles instead of the full-length version. Although the articles can be read in sequential fashion, the true value of this collection is its usefulness as a reference on topics related to consumer behavior. Topics covered are wide ranging, as reflected by section headings, e.g., "Consumption and the Affluent Society," "Family, Gender and Socialization," "The History of Consumer Society," "Foundations of Economic Theories of Consumption," "Globalization and Consumer Culture," and "Perpetuating Consumer Culture: Media, Advertising, and Wants Creation." The book is enhanced by eminent economist John Kenneth Galbraith's foreword which integrates the various sections of the work. A great addition to any undergraduate or graduate library collection.
