It's the end of the school year. The long-awaited holidays have finally arrived. Little Nicholas, his parents and Granny hit the road heading for the sea, and move into the Beau-Rivage Hotel. At the beach, Nicholas wastes little time making new friends: there's Ben, who isn't on holiday because he lives here; Freddy, who eats anything, all the time... Even fish... raw. There's George, who talks funny because he's English, Paul the constant crybaby and Christopher, who always wants to be right and is really, really annoying. Nicholas also gets to know Elizabeth, a little girl who follows him everywhere, wide-eyed. "How sweet, those two. I hear wedding bells in the future," laugh the grown-ups. Nicholas panics! Luckily his pals are there to help him... and to cause trouble. Between the beach, the hotel and the forest, with his friends, his family, the beach attendant and the swimming coach, Nicholas is really going to enjoy a holiday to remember.

C'est la fin de l'année scolaire. Les vacances tant attendues sont enfin arrivées. Le Petit Nicolas, ses parents et grand-mère s'en vont à la mer, passer leurs vacances à l'Hôtel Beau-Rivage. À la plage, Nicolas se fait de nouveaux amis: il y a Blaise, qui n'est pas en vacances parce qu'il habite ici, Fructueux qui mange tout? même quand c'est vivant? même quand c'est sale. Il y a Djodjo qui parle drôle parce qu'il est anglais, Crépin qui pleure tout le temps et puis il y a Côme, qui veut toujours avoir raison et c'est très énervant. Nicolas rencontre aussi Isabelle, une petite fille qui le suit partout et le fixe tout le temps avec de grands yeux ronds un peu inquiétants. «Qu'ils sont choux, ces deux là. Je crois bien qu'on va les marier!» rigolent les adultes. Nicolas panique! Heureusement, ses amis sont là pour l'aider... et causer des ennuis. Entre la plage, l'hôtel et la forêt, avec ses amis, sa famille, le plagiste et le sauveteur, Nicolas va vraiment profiter d'un séjour inoubliable.
